Test collections for all

چکیده

Researchers working in the IR field have placed much reliance on building test collections that can be used widely by many researchers. Many collections have been used for years even decades. In the age of contextual IR, this talk will advocate an alternative less tried approach, that of building many context specific collections, that don’t require a great deal of effort to build but may not be all that re-usable. There is an increasing quantity of research examining this area and through an overview of this research, I shall argue that building your own collection is a better approach to take. Bio Dr. Mark Sanderson is an associate professor at the University of Sheffield. He has published extensively in the filed of Information Retrieval producing a number of highly cited papers including a number in the field of evaluation. With Paul Clough, Dr. Sanderson initiated the successful ImageCLEF evaluation exercise and more recently jointly launched the geoCLEF evaluation with Fred Gey and Ray Larson at Berkeley. In recent years, Dr. Sanderson has focused his evaluation research interests to the efficient building of test collections, development of new evaluation measures and the study of query log data and last year worked at the research labs of a major search engine conducting analysis on one of their large log data sets. Research from that work has just been published at the European Conference on Information Retrieval.

PERCUTANEOUS DRAINAGE OF ABDOMINAL ABSCESSES AND FLUID COLLECTIONS

This report summarizes the results of 64 percutaneous catheter drainage of abdominal abscesses and fluid collections in 56 patients. Aspiration and drainage was guided with computed tomography in 34 patients and with ultrasound in 30 patients. Success rate was 90%. Infected collections were successfully drained in 94% and noninfected collections in 72% . Partial success was achieved in two...

Test Collection Diagnosis and Treatment

Test collections are a mainstay of information retrieval research. Since the 1990s, large reusable test collections have been developed in the context of community evaluations such as TREC, NTCIR, CLEF, and INEX. Recently, advances in pooling practice as well as crowdsourcing technologies have placed test collection building back into the hands of the small research group or company. In all of ...

Boiling down information retrieval test collections

Constructing large-scale test collections is costly and timeconsuming, and a few relevance assessment methods have been proposed for constructing “minimal” information retrieval test collections that may still provide reliable experimental results. In contrast to building up such test collections, we take existing test collections constructed through the traditional pooling approach and empiric...

Emphasizing the Need for TREC-like Collaboration Towards MIR Evaluation

The need for standardized large-scale evaluation of music information retrieval (MIR) and music digital library (MDL) methodologies is being addressed with the recent resolution calling for the construction of the infrastructure necessary to support MIR/MDL research. The methodology of our MIR study investigating the use of n-grams for polyphonic music retrieval has been based on a small-scale ...

Evaluation Issues in Information Retrieval

Evaluation techniques are critical to research in all areas of science and engineering. The major evaluation techniques used in information retrieval today were put in place over 20 years ago when Cyril Cleverdon’s Cranfield projects started an evaluation pattern that still largely dominates the field, that is, using recall/precision measures and using one of the standard test collections. Wher...

Effect of Seed Priming on Enhancement of Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Annual Sainfoin (Onobrychis crista-galli (L.) Lam.) in Medium and Long-term Collections of Gene Bank

Annual Sainfoin (Onobrychis crista-galli (L.) Lam.) is widely adapted to moderate and cold regions of Iran and naturally grows in pasture and rangelands used for forage in these areas. In order to study the effects of priming on seed germination and seedling growth in O. crista-galli, two factorial experiments were conducted based on a randomized complete design with three replications under la...
